A DBS Adult First Check is a quick search of the Adults Barred List to see I an applicant is barred from
working with adults, so they can start work supervised until their full certificate has been issued.
Adult First Check was previously known as a POVA (Protected of Vulnerable Adults) and an ISA
(Independent Safeguarding Authority).
An Adult First Check can only be requested if applicants are in Regulated Activity with adults and
should only be used in exceptional circumstances.
An Adult First Check cannot be requested separately; it can only be requested where an Enhanced
level of check is required by law.
DBS Adult First Checks are not suitable for employees who will be working with children and adults,
as this check only searches the Adults Barred List. There is no equivalent fast-track check for the
Children’s Barred List.
How long do results take?
Results are typically issued within 24 hours; however, they can take up to 3 working days.
Adult First Check Results
An Adult First Check will issue one of three results:
No match exists for this person on the current adults’ barred list: In this case, the applicant has
not been barred from working with adults, and can start work under supervision.
Registered Body must wait for the DBS certificate: In this case, the details provided may have
indicated a match on the adults’ barred list. However, further investigation is required to confirm
this, so the employer should wait for the full DBS Certificate before making a recruitment decision.
Certificate completed: The result will also clearly state that the Adult First Check only forms the
first part of the criminal record check application process and that further information will follow.
